The Role of the Canada Summer Games Coaching Staff

The Canada Summer Games requires three roles for coaching staff:

  • Head Coach- recommended by the Softball BC selection committee, (Mike Renney chair), approved by the Softball BC board of directors
  • Assistant Coach (selected by the Head Coach with consultation and approval from Softball BC)
  • Team Manager (selected by the Head Coach with consultation and approval from Softball BC)

Role of the Head Coach

The applicant must demonstrate interpersonal, human relations, communication and leadership skills, and be prepared to commit to a minimum two year term preparation plan culminating with the participation in the 2021 Summer Games in the Niagara region of Ontario.

Knowledge of Sport Science and qualification in areas of Sport Medicine and current first aid would be considered an asset. Applicants will be subject to a Criminal Records Search in compliance with the Criminal Records Review Program

In addition to the general responsibilities which are clearly defined as: responsibility for talent identification; athlete preparation; and team development; the Head Coach is subject to an evaluation by Softball BC on an understanding that appointment to this position may be rescinded at any time during the term if all requirements of the Program are not fulfilled.

It will be the responsibility of the head coach to work within the Softball BC approved budget, as well, to work within Softball BC’s administrative process for all travel, equipment and uniform purchases.

Athlete selection will be fully at the discretion of the coaching staff, however Identification Camps at key locations will be required, as well, scouting at key events will be required.  The boys team will be limited to athletes born in 2000 or later and the girls selected will be limited to athletes born in 2003 or later.

Head Coach – Certification Requirements

Head Coach Applicants will only be considered if you meet the following criteria: 

  1. At the time of selection, the coach shall have, or demonstrate the potential of gaining, Competition Development Certified with MED (new) status.

In addition to helping lead and guide your athletes to perform at their best at the Games, coaches are responsible for supervising them and ensuring their safety and well-being throughout their Games experience.  This includes travelling on Games transportation to the Games with your athletes, staying in Games accommodations with your team, and supervising your athletes throughout the Games. Coaches are responsible for the actions of their athletes.  All coaches are expected to uphold and support the rules of the Canada Summer Games and Softball BC.

Only those shortlisted for interviews will receive follow up communications, Those selected to the short list will have interviews arranged with our selection committee, along with guidelines for a presentation to be put to the committee on Team preparation plans from the Spring of 2019 until the games themselves.
